From the Back Cover:
----------------------------------------------------------------- Karin Hanssen lives and works in Antwerp. She was born in 1960 in the city, where she studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and graduated from the Higher Institute of Fine Arts in 1993. Hanssen's paintings and drawings are replete with meticulously constructed layers of philosophical and pictorial meanings, and reward prolonged looking. She incessantly explores the concepts of temporal disorientation, social semiotics, feminism, the 'Rückenfigur' and 'The Borrowed Gaze'. As a child in an orphanage, Hanssen discovered the power of painting and its relationship to fantasy and reality, which allowed her to create her own world.   This book is a comprehensive survey of her paintings and drawings for the past quarter of a century. Hanssen’s work is collected by institutions and private individuals. She has participated in many international biennials and exhibitions. Karin Hanssen’s work is exclusively represented by Roberto Polo Gallery, Brussels. _________________________________________________________________________________ Ontdek de expo 'A room of one's own' in de Roberto Polo Gallery 12 september tot 16 november 2014 | Brussel Roberto Polo Gallery heeft de eer om een dertigtal recente schilderijen van Karin Hanssen te presenteren.
