About the Author
"Juan Manuel (Escalona, Toledo, 1282-1348). Espana. Era sobrino de Alfonso X el Sabio y nieto de Fernando III y pertenecia a la nobleza. Su padre era el Infante don Manuel, nieto del rey Fernando III de Castilla el Santo. Juan Manuel era muy rico y se dice que podia cabalgar durante todo un dia sin alcanzar el limite de sus propiedades. Habia heredado de su padre el titulo de Duque de Villena, donde pasaba temporadas dedicado a la caza reflejadas en su Libro de la caza. Desde muy joven combatio con destreza y se destaco, junto al rey Sancho IV (su primo), en la Batalla contra los musulmanes del Salado. En 1299 se caso con dona Isabel, infanta de Mallorca. Poco despues ella murio y Juan Manuel se caso con dona Constanza de Aragon, hija del rey Jaime II. Algunos anos mas tarde, otra vez viudo, se caso con dona Blanca Nunez. Fue regente de Castilla durante la minoria de Alfonso XI (1321-1325), y combatio junto a este contra los musulmanes en la batalla de Algeciras (1343). Su hija Constanza estuvo casada con Pedro de Portugal, episodio reflejado en Reinar despues de morir, de Luis Velez de Guevara (obra publicada por Linkgua). Hacia 1345 abandono la politica y se dedico a la literatura y la meditacion religiosa, murio en 1348 en Cordoba. Muchos de sus escritos se han perdido, como el Libro de los Cantares, coleccion de poesias y Reglas como se debe trovar, el mas antiguo tratado castellano de versificacion. Escribio asimismo el Libro de los Estados, varios textos historicos y el Libro infinito, llamado tambien de los castigos."
