Es un estudio de historia intelectual espa�ola a trav�s de la biograf�a del salmantino Federico de On�s (1885-1966), que fue catedr�tico de Literatura espa�ola en las universidades de Oviedo y Salamanca, antes de incorporarse a la Universidad de Columbia (Nueva York) en 1916. Desde ese puesto docente realiz� una enorme tarea de difusi�n de la cultura espa�ola a la vez que la integraba en el conjunto de las culturas hisp�nicas de ambos lados del Atl�ntico. En esa tarea actu� como representante espa�ol de la Junta para la Ampliaci�n de Estudios, y se convirti� en figura clave para la difusi�n de la cultura espa�ola de aquellos a�os a trav�s de empresas editoriales y acad�micas. Figuras de la cultura espa�ola como Jos� Castillejo, Mar�a de Maeztu, Fernando de los R�os, Vicente Blasco Ib��ez o Federico Garc�a Lorca encontraron siempre en On�s el m�s firme apoyo. La guerra civil espa�ola supuso, para On�s, la ruptura con la vida cultural, pero acrecent� la importancia de su papel en la atenci�n a los intelectuales que, como �l, optaron por el camino del exilio.
