Iwan Gontscharow (1812-1891) gehört deshalb zu den großen epischen Schöpfern, weil er sich über seine Gestalten des Besserwissens, also des Urteils enthält. Sie sind, wie sie sind. Wie er sie in kleinen präzisen Einzelzügen beobachtet hat und nun in sich gerundet vor sich sieht: recht hat der tätige Freund und edel- gesinnte Rivale Stolz, recht hat Oljga, deren Liebe Oblomow schließlich doch nicht zu retten vermag; und recht hat auf seine Weise auch er, eine von Grund auf apathische Natur, die sich der Schwerkraft des Daseins fügt. Die Untüchtigkeit, die er verkörpert (meint Fritz Ernst in seinem Essay), ist unter Umständen etwas Zartes, Vornehmes, unter Umständen etwas für Millionen. Menschen Unerreichbares - eine Wahrheit auch sie, ein Stück Leben. In schlicht kreatürlicher Fülle steht Oblomow für immer an seinem Platz unter den großen Gestalten der Weltliteratur.
