This monumental opus is without doubt the most important work in Islamic mathematics in the European languages since the pioneering studies of Heinrich Suter and E. Wiedemann. Roshdi Rashed provides an exhaustive treatment of what he calls " infinitesimal mathematics " - the mathematical measurements of surfaces and curved solids (9th - 11th Century). He illuminates a field of Islamic mathematical analysis as a continuous tradition rather than islolated individual thinkers. Accordingly, his treatment casts light on an important aspect of Islamic mathemtaiques as never before while also elucidating the protohistory of infinitesimal calculus. Volume II. was printed before Volume I. but were distributed together. Rashed presents the critically edited original Arabic text with a French translation. This magnum opus is in fact a model and standard for all future work in Islamic mathematics. One must congratulate Rashed for producing such a work and the Al-Furqan Foundation for having sponsored it and for printing such high-quality editions with so few typographical errors. -- Seyyed Hossein Nasr
