Andras Kaldor is a Hungarian artist living in England who specialises in architectural paintings. His recent book, Opera Houses of Europe, chronicled the architectural splendours of the opera lover's world. In his new work he crosses the Atlantic to survey the no less splendid buildings of New York, concentrating mainly on those designed and constructed at the end of the nineteenth century. Most of the buildings featured are included in the New York City Preservation Commission's list. Kaldor features the main facades as well as finer architectural details of some fifty historic New York landmarks ranging from the U S Custom House and the Woolworth Building in Lower Manhartan, through the Flatiron Building, the Empire State Building, Grand Central Station and St Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown and the Metropolitan Museum, the Dakota and the Frick Collection uptown.
