Now in its eighth edition, the Almanac of American Education, formerly Education Statistics of the United States, assembles key educational data drawn primarily from the US Census Bureau and the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES). The volume, divided into three sections ('National Education Statistics, ' 'Region and State Education Statistics, ' and 'County Education Statistics') examines enrollment at all grade levels and offers historical statistics for comparison, along with degree-completion data and expenditures at the county level. The national data are pulled directly from NCES, but the other state or local statistics are tabulated from various public sources. In an era of shrinking library budgets and increased demand for immediate information, librarians will need to decide if the cost of a standing order for the annual print edition (or ebook edition, offered in partnership with Rowman & Littlefield publishers) is a worthwhile investment. However, reference librarians fielding educational research questions may find it convenient to have the Bernan publication on hand, especially for its usefulness as a reliable guide to the key data sources. Overall, the information compiled here is invaluable for students, faculty, administrators, and anyone seeking valid information on the American educational system. Summing Up: Recommended. All academic and public libraries; professionals/practitioners.--CHOICE
The latest edition of this statistical reference compares American educational opportunities at the national, state, and county level. Updated data (both historical and current) includes school-enrollment figures; unemployment rates by educational attainment level; and various analyses by county, state, and region, including per-student expenditures and free-lunch eligibility statistics. As most of the national data is no longer provided in print form from the Census Bureau, this volume remains a core reference work for academic libraries and special collections in education.--Booklist
The Almanac of American Education is a useful print compilation of statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Center for Education Statistics, among other sources. The almanac has a very useful appendix providing a guide to educational resources on the Internet for further research. This almanac is a must have in any educational research setting, and would be a good addition to any public or academic library collection. The scope of the almanac, stated clearly in the preface, makes it essential for anyone doing comparative research.--American Reference Books Annual
