El árbol de la ciencia (1911), una novela semi-autobiográfica de Pío Baroja, es una obra emblemática de la generación del 98 y refleja muchas de las inquietudes sociales, científicas y filosóficas de la época. Se escribió poco después de que España perdiera sus últimas colonias y durante un periodo de grandes avances científicos. Entre las características noventayochistas caben destacar el pesimismo, la desilusión con España y la sociedad, dudas sobre la ciencia, atracción por los filósofos alemanes (Kant y Schopenhauer), digresiones que interrumpen la línea narrativa (en este caso la larga conversación filosófica de la cuarta parte), y la incertidumbre ante el futuro. La novela se desarrolla durante los últimos años del siglo XIX y narra la vida de Andrés Hurtado, estudiante de medicina. Pese a que el joven entró a la escuela de medicina con muchas ganas de aprender, la educación que recibe lo deja desilusionado y pronto adopta una mentalidad negativa.
