From the Back Cover:

A COMPANION TO THE CITY OF ROME

A Companion to the City of Rome provides an authoritative and up-to-date overview of current research on the development of the city of Rome from its legendary foundations as a settlement on the banks of the Tiber up until circa 600 AD. Featuring original contributions from a wide range of scholars at the forefront of new developments in their respective fields, the essays integrate the latest archaeological, topographical, and historical evidence to address key aspects of the physical structure of the city and the lives of its inhabitants. After an overview of source materials, readings explore Rome s urban landscape and fabric, its evolving population, the experiences of living and dying in the city, the local economy, civic life, and the staging of Roman triumphs. A final series of essays examine the reception of ancient Rome from antiquity through to the present day. A Companion to the City of Rome represents an indispensible resource for anyone interested in the history of one of the most important cities of the ancient world.
