Excerpt from Cent Per Cent: A Story Written Upon a Bill Stamp
Panic in the City a few years since, with the outcry that took place almost immediately after against the Bill Discounters of the West End. Letters and articles filled the public journals, and the strongest indignation was expressed against the whole race of Vampires - as they were termed in one notorious case. It was at this period of public excitement that the author con ceived the idea of writing the following story, which, from the recent reports in the public journals - showing the Cent per Cent system of accommodation still to be in full force and vigour - is perhaps as appropriate now as at any.

Paperback. Condition: NEW. Print on Demand. This book unravels the machinations of the Victorian-era bill discounters, providing a close-up view of financial malfeasance through the lens of a relentless moneylender and his victims. The author immerses the reader in a seedy underworld of debt, extortion, and moral decay, mirroring the realities of a society corrupted by rampant greed. The text delves into the psychology of manipulation, as the usurer preys on the desperate, exploiting their vulnerabilities for personal gain. Its blend of historical context, vivid characterisation, and incisive social commentary offers a cautionary tale about the enduring consequences of unchecked avarice.
