A life without prayer is a cramped, darkened, suffocated, distorted life.
One of the most. Important methods of prayer, as we have learnt from the common sense and experience of the Saints, is mental prayer or Meditation. It consists in this. We place before our minds some of the many truths of the Faith, and allow the mind to expatiate upon them, in the specially realized presence of God, and by His grace. The soul is thus clinging to a real objec tive fact. The mind is exercised on truth, and it is contact with truth which gives it pleasure and trains and braces it. The affections are warmed by the noblest objects. The will is roused to fresh activity. No other method of prayer is so calculated to encourage close and fruitful com munion with God.
