About the Author
Francisco de Miranda (Caracas, 1750-Espa a, 1816). Venezuela. Hijo de Sebasti n de Miranda, comerciante canario, y Francisca Antonia Rodr guez, caraque a. Naci el 28 de marzo de 1750. Estuvo involucrado en la Revoluci n Francesa, la Independencia de los Estados Unidos, y de Hispanoam rica. Estudi en la Universidad de Caracas y fue uno de los hombres m s cultos de su poca. Ten a conocimientos de matem ticas y geograf a y domin el franc s, el ingl s, el lat n y el griego. En 1781 combati junto a tropas espa olas, a favor de las fuerzas independentistas, en Pensacola (colonia inglesa en la Florida). Poco despu s se fue al Reino Unido en busca de apoyo en su pretensi n de independizar Hispanoam rica. Tambi n con ese prop sito fue, en plena Revoluci n Francesa (1792), a Par s. En Londres vivi con su ama de llaves, la inglesa Sarah Andrews, con quien tuvo dos hijos. En 1805 viaj a Nueva York y en 1806 march en una expedici n revolucionaria a Hait . Y m s tarde se dirigi al puerto de Ocumare, en Venezuela, donde fue derrotado por los espa oles. Miranda fue arrestado el 31 de julio de 1812 por un grupo de civiles y militares, entre ellos Sim n Bol var. En 1813 fue conducido a Espa a, a la c rcel del arsenal de La Carraca (Andaluc a). All muri el 14 de julio de 1816.
