This new edition of one of our most popular publications is a fast-paced and colorful narrative of the social, cultural, and political climate that breathed life into "Jacksonian Democracy." In his inimitable style, Remini crafts a memorable portrait of Jackson: the young hellraiser and war hero; the stern judge; the determined campaigner; and, finally, the chief executive of the people. Other leading political figures, such as Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, are paid due attention and discussions of the vital issues of the day-the Bank War, Indian removal, the states' rights conflict, and slavery-are nicely balanced by attention to the era's various reform, religious, and artistic movements. In addition to the newest research and revelations, new to the Second Edition is an extensive photo essay. Written by one of the foremost authorities on Andrew Jackson, The Jacksonian Era is simply a great read for anyone interested in Jackson and his time.

About the Author:
Robert V. Remini, preeminent authority of the life and times of Andrew Jackson, is a History and Research Professor of the Humanities emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago, where he has taught and done scholarly research since 1965. From 1982 to 1987 he was the Director of UIC s Institute for the Humanities. In addition to teaching at both Columbia and Fordham universities early in his career, Dr. Remini was the Southall Freeman Professor at the University of Richmond in 1992, and the W. Harold and Martha Welsh Professor of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame in 1995 and 1996. Dr. Remini has received many awards and honors in his illustrious career, including the National Book Award for his three-volume biography of Andrew Jackson in 1984. He has lectured on King Andrew at the White House and for the Smithsonian Institution, and he has received the George Washington Medal of Honor from the Freedom Foundation. As well as other distinguished books on Jackson, Dr. Rimini is the author of Henry Clay, Statesman for the Union and Martin Van Buren and the Making of the Democratic Path. He is currently completing a two-volume biography of Daniel Webster.
Synopsis:
What is so wonderful about the Jacksonian era is the fact that after more than a hundred years it remains a controversial period in American history, and historians regularly provide us with new interpretations and new evaluations to explain what and why events occurred and individuals behaved as they did. In presenting this second edition, the author has tried to be responsive to the newer viewpoints that have been forthcoming since the book's initial publication. But there can be no question that current studies of the market revolution, the role of women, religious reforms and social developments have added immeasurably to our understanding of this era.
