Book Description Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Dustjacket is a bit rubbed, now in loose protective plastic overwrap. Retailer's label to front flyleaf. Map illustrated end-paper with light offset. Owner's Ex-Libris embossed stamp to front end-paper. One of the most important features from the point of view of a collector of Africana is its illustrations. Harford's notebook contains small but beautifully executed pencil sketches made while he was on active service and pasted into his book at the appropriate places in the text, and many of these sketches, photographed and enlarged, have been used as illustrations in his published Journal. As editor, Daphne Child has omitted the last two paragraphs from Harford's original manuscript, which were irrelevant to the story he was telling. In all other respect the work is presented (except for slight alterations in punctuation) exactly as it is written. her comments and explanatory notes have been kept to a minimum and are printed in italics. 88 pages.
