However, by Edwardian times there was widespread local poverty and this inspired Robert Tressell to depict Hastings as Mugsborough in the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists. Between the two World Wars there were many new developments; an enlarged and extended sea front, the White Rock Pavilion, a Bathing Pool built to Olympic standards and a new hospital.
