Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In this compelling investigation, author Michael Smith explores the critical moment in a spys life: that split-second decision to embrace a double life; to cheat and hide and hurt; to risk disgrace even death without any guarantee of being rewarded or even recognised. Each chapter centres on a number of different spies, following the path they took that led, finally, to the point of no return. Were they propelled by personal convictions? Blackmailed and left without a choice? Too desperate for money to think about the consequences? Through in-depth insider knowledge, Michael Smith also uncovers new and unknown cases, including a spy inside ISIS, President Trumps links with Russia and Edward Snowdens role as a whistle-blower, to offer compelling psychological portraits of these men and women, homing unerringly on the fault-lines and shady corners of their characters, their weaknesses and their strengths, the lies they tell other people, and the lies they always end up telling themselves. Hertfordshire has seen armies marching, pillaging, and mutinying; battles have been lost and won; royalty held court; aristocrats and merchants had their country estates; while the common man worked, lived, loved and left his mark on the landscape. In this book the entire story from the geology of the area, through the succession of Prehistoric, Celtic, Roman, Saxon and Danish settlers is told. Alfred fortified Hertford and gave the county its name, while the Normans accepted the English surrender at Little Berkhamsted and at St Albans the Magna Carta was drafted. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Every child has heard of Guy Fawkes and will most likely have watched a 'guy' being burnt on a bonfire and fireworks lighting up the night sky on Bonfire Night. This book answers the questions of history that lie behind the celebrations of 5 November. Who was Guy Fawkes and how to did he come to be below the chamber of the House of Lords in the first hour of 5 November 1605? What desperation drove those involved to plan a horrific massacre of the Protestant royal family and government? Alan Hayne's probing analysis offers the clearest, most balanced view yet of often conflicting evidence, as he disentangles the threads of disharmony, intrigue, betrayal, terror and retribution. In this updated edition he gathers together startling evidence to uncover the depth and extent of the plot, and how close the plotters came to de-stabilising the government in one of the most notorious terrorist plots of British history. This enthralling book will grip the general reader, while the scope of its detailed research will require historians of the period to consider again the commanding importance of the plot throughout the seventeenth century. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. During the desperate days of May 1940 that ended with the fall of France, the 3rd Battalion Royal Tank Regiment was sent to Calais where it played a vital role in the week-long battle. In helping to stem the inexorable German armoured advance, the battalion was praised by Churchill for giving the British Expeditionary Force vital extra time to effect the crucial evacuation from Dunkirk's beaches. In the spring of 1941, 3 RTR fought the panzers once again in the ill-fated Greek campaign. They fought a costly withdrawal against the Germans, losing all their tanks, but inflicting heavy casualties. Hitler was furious: the six week Greek campaign delayed Operation "Barbarossa" which allowed the Soviets time to re-group before the Germans reached Moscow. Taking part in the D-Day invasion in June 1944, 3 RTR was in the thick of all the desperate Normandy battles. They took part in the "Great Swan" to capture Amiens and Antwerp, then provided right flank protection in Operation 'Market Garden' and helped halt the panzers in the Ardennes. Equipped with new Comet tanks 3 RTR swept across the Rhine and four other well-defended rivers to meet the Russians on the Baltic. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Major-General Rea Leakey is one of the Royal Tank Regiment's greatest heroes of World War II. He led a charmed life throughout the North African desert campaign and later in the battles of North West Europe. This is his autobiography which covers the period of his Army service, from joining his first regiement to the end of World War II. Many of his exploits are hair-raising, some are even too fantastic to be true - but true they are: he won his second Military Cross as a British Army captain fighting as an Australian lance-corporal during the siege of Tobruk; before taking up a staff appointment he spent ten days' leave with his old regiment, fighting as a tank gunner in the 8th Army's diasterous Gazala battles, escaping with his life. This book provides a graphic eye witness account by one who was there at the "sharp end" - as a young tank squadron commander fighting Rommel's Afrika Korps in the desert, and later in North West Europe. There, Major-General Leakey served as the Regimental Second in Command of 44 RTR, beforecommanding two other famous tank regiments in succession - 7 RTR in Normandy, where he supported the Czechs and was awarded a third MC, and then 5 RTR in the fight through to the Rhine and on into Germany and victory, for which he recieved a DSO. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. After the Second World War, cars in Britain were very hard to come by. Most new models had to go for export or were reserved for those drivers who needed them the most, such as doctors. Petrol was still rationed, roads inadequate and modern technology lacking. With the arrival of the 1950s, things slowly began to change: Morris, Austin and Ford put increasing numbers of British families on the road, new sports cars from MG, Jaguar, Triumph and Austin-Healey promised a thrilling drive, and innovative motors such as the Land Rover and the bubble car emerged. By 1958, new car buying was leading a consumer boom, and Britains manufacturers still had the market to themselves. Giles Chapman investigates the fascinating motoring history of the 1950s. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Greenwich and Woolwich have long been associated with the great national monuments. Since the seventeenth century Greenwich has been associated with 'time'. The time-ball at the Old Royal Observatory still falls daily at one o'clock, just as it has done since 1833. But 'time' also means change. This fascinating collection of over 250 photographs shows that many changes which the area underwent between 1858 and the 1970s. It is not a definitive history of the London Borough of Greenwich, its monuments and its institutions, but a vividy authentic 'taste' of the life and times of the people of a region which was, until 1889, still part of Kent. Farms, rural villages, market gardens, open countryside, brickfields, heavy industry, bustling High Streets, the sounds of ships' sirens, from the River Thames and of guns being tested at Woolwich Arsenal were all part of everyday social and industrial life for the ordinary people that the images in this selection represent. Throughout periods of immense change - the amalgamation of separate communities into the metropolis, the 1920s and '30s, the heavy bombing of the Second World War, re-development - and the rigours of modern city life, the people of the Borough are shown at work and at play. This extraordinary portrayal of a time gone by recreates, reveals and perhaps reminds a few of a time that has now disappeared forever. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. In the 1950s and '60s, aware of what was about to happen to Birmingham, Dennis Norton took his camera and went to work. Photographing buildings along the route of the forthcoming inner ring road, around New Street station and in other areas of the city due for redevelopment, he captured a Birmingha, that is now long gone but fondly remembered by many. Almost half a century later Mark Norton discovered these photographs, taken by the father he never knew: Dennis died just nine weeks before his son was born. Mark set about retracing his father's footsteps, to discover what has been lost and to compare past with present. In the process he gained a respect for Birmingham that had been missing when he grew up amid the concrete, subways and urban motorways of the 1970s. Anyone who remembers Birmingham as it was in the 1950s and '60s will be fascinated by these recently rediscovered photographs, while those who only know the city of today will be astonished to see the changes that have taken place. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The SS Great Britain Story is a concise account of one of the most famous steamships ever built. The great Victorian engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel embraced the latest innovations, including an iron hull and a screw-propeller, to create an ocean liner that was decades ahead of its time. Launched by Prince Albert in 1843, the SS Great Britain was nearly lost three years later when she ran aground in Dundrum Bay, Ireland. Fortunately she weathered the winter storms and went on to enjoy a long and chequered career. She spent many years transporting emigrants to Australia, served as a cargo vessel, and almost ended her days stranded on the Falkland Islands. Following an incredible rescue mission in the 1970s, fully documented here, she was returned to dry-dock in Bristol, where she was originally built, and is now the centrepiece of a fascinating and ongoing restoration project. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Wareham is a fertile oasis well watered by the rivers Frome and Piddle. The early town evolved from a centre of Roman pottery production to a high status Saxon burg. During King Alfreds reign massive earthen banks were constructed and the street pattern of today has been constrained by that huge fortification. However, the meteoric rise of Poole in the early Middle Ages was largely at the expense of Wareham, whose fortunes were eclipsed by its younger neighbour. A disastrous fire in 1762 destroyed much of the ancient town, but it still retains some charm. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Sir Walter Raleigh was one of the brightest stars in the Elizabethan firmament. Born into relative obscurity in rural Devon, he grew up in company of smugglers and fishermen, listening to stories of voyages to far-flung lands. His lust for adventure was to take him from the bloody battlefields of Europe to the colonies of the New World and on to the dazzling court of Good Queen Bess. He was a naval commander against the Spanish Armada and led two expeditions to South America to search for El Dorado. This is the story of his relationship with the two women who dominated his life: Elizabeth, his queen, and Bess, her lady-in-waiting and his secret wife. It is the story of one of the greatest men in the greatest age in English history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. If you owned a car in 1960s Britain, then youll love this blast back in time to when driving was still fun, highway speed limits were unheard-of (well, until 1965 anyway), and buying a new car was a thrilling family event. It was a golden period for iconic classic cars the Mini Cooper, Jaguar E-type, AC Cobra and MGB but also a time when British manufacturers really got their act together with stylish family models. Who can forget great little runabouts with evocative names like Anglia, Herald, Imp, Viva, Cortina and Hunter? Meanwhile, Rovers, Triumphs and Jags were delighting executives as they cruised along near-empty motorways. It was too good to last, of course, with regulations looming and fancy foreign cars creeping on to Britains driveways by the end of the decade. In this richly illustrated book, Giles Chapman recalls all the key cars of the era that you probably owned or at least coveted and brings the swinging 60s back to life. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This is the untold story of Liverpool's children in the Second World War. Whilst everyone is familiar with the tales of evacuees who were rushed out of the cities once the bombs started falling, many of us are unaware that many stayed behind, either by choice or necessity, as the city of their childhood disintegrated and burned around them. In the words of those who experienced the Liverpool Blitz first-hand, we hear of their adventures and misadventures, the fun and games and ever-present danger, and the humor and sorrow of those wartime years. This is an important and revealing look at the war as seen through the eyes of these children. This book not only explores the memories of a childhood ravaged by war, but also the formative effect this had on individuals' lives. It reflects the collective spirit of a city that refused to be crushed, even at the darkest hours of the Luftwaffe's bombing campaign. Ideal for anyone who lived through those times, or who is fascinated by experiences and the legacy of the wartime generation, this new title pays tribute to the war's forgotten children. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Derby is an ancient chartered settlement with Roman origins, which got caught up in the leading edge of the Industrial Revolution and became the important manufacturing city and regional capital it is today. Fortunately, despite its expansion, it has managed to preserve much of its medieval core. The city was also fortunate in having had a pioneer Victorian photographer, Richard Keene, to record the changes which, between 1853 and 1894, transformed the eighteenth-century market town into a late Victorian industrial one. The book contrasts the two, while highlighting the more drastic developments that took place during the twentieth century, especially the latter part, when much destruction and unsympathetic rebuilding went on; this still continues today. Maxwell Craven has combined a fascinating selection of historic images with modern views in order to document the transformation that has occurred. The result is an invaluable record of Derbys development over the years and is sure to appeal to residents and visitors alike. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. On 26 November 1703, during the worst storm that Britain had ever seen, Henry Winstanley died in his pioneering lighthouse as it was blown apart. He had defied incredible odds to build the first Eddystone Lighthouse in 1698, saving the lives of many sailors from the fate of the thousands who previously died upon the rocks. The Great Gale not only destroyed the man and his lighthouse, but also saw complete devastation throughout the land. And at sea, some 8000 sailors were drowned that night, within yards of the land. Winstanley was an ingenious man. He owned a house of gadgets which was one of London's foremost attractions for decades. In 1695, two of his five ships were lost on Eddystone. He was determined that no more ships should founder and, though thwarted by weather and politics, he built a lighthouse, the first of its kind. It survived terrible winters and withstood devastating storms, guiding ships away from the treacherous rocks that lay ahead with its dim candlelight. After the great storm it was as if the lighthouse had never been. Ultimately, Winstanley's lighthouse led to the building of others on the Eddystone rocks and beyond, thus transforming the safety of shipping. This illustrated work vividly recreates the story of the Eddystone Lighthouse, the character of the man who built it with grim determination fighting against all odds, and the power of the elements that finally destroyed them both.
