Paul Vincent Carroll, (1900-1968), playwright. Born in Dundalk, Co. Louth, he was educated at St Patrick's College, Drumcondra. In 1920 he moved to Glasgow, where he taught and began writing. In 1930 The Watched Pot was produced by the Peacock [see Abbey Theatre], followed by Things That Are Caesar's (1932), The Coggerers (1937), and Shadow and Substance (1937), which concerns a cultured parish priest's encounter with bigotry and with the mysteries of faith. The White Steed (1939) was a commentary on the decay of rural life. His other plays include The Strings, My Lord, Are False (1942), The Wise Have Not Spoken (1944), The Devil Came from Dublin (1951), and Green Cars Go East (1951)1956: Farewell to Greatness presented on BBC Television. Goodbye to the Summer (a revised version of Weep for Tomorrow) completed and made available in typescript form. 1958: Irish Stories and Plays (includes the first publication of The Devil Came from Dublin final revised form of the text). This version differs somewhat from the 1951 text. Several years later Carroll collaborated with Bernard Wiesen on as yet unproduced film version of The Devil Came from Dublin. 1966: Farewell to Greatness first published. 1968: October 20 Carroll died suddenly at his home in Bromley, Kent, a suburban area of London. Carroll had been in poor health because of a heart condition. 1970: Goodbye to the Summer first published.
