Hats off to supply teachers, probably one of the most stressful jobs in education! Supply teachers are unsung heroes, slotting into the gaps that need filling; without them many schools would soon grind to a standstill. And yet, in the current educational climate, many of our supply teachers are relatively inexperienced as teachers and even experienced teachers can find the job challenging.

The art of supply teaching is a fine one; too weak or too lenient and you can have a riot on your hands. Finding a balance of firm but friendly in such a short space of time is rarely simple especially faced with varying expectations from different classes and different schools.

As a teacher I am learning all of the time and hope I always will do. Transferring to the supply sector presented me with new challenges; some I had the experience to deal with, others I sought the advice of other supply staff, for many I needed to create my own solutions. Every day I learned something new.

In this book I have compiled ideas and strategies that will help you to become a successful supply teacher faster. It outlines the kinds of dilemmas that regularly face supply staff and cover supervisors and a host of practical solutions to either pre-empt or deal with problems. It covers both primary and secondary supply teaching and I have taken into account the various kinds of issues encountered at different ages. It is aimed at supply teachers and cover supervisors but would additionally be of benefit to PGCE students and NQTs who also throw themselves in at the deep end when entering unfamiliar schools and taking on other people's classes.

It is important to keep a sense of perspective - there are many excellent supply teachers but it takes time to become established; with a bit of foresight and a wealth of strategies at your disposal you will have a shorter route to feeling both confident and relaxed in your job.
