"I wanted to write a book which was like a great adventure story but also had something to do with my life. I had seen two earthquakes transform our society - the sexual revolution and Britain's redefinition as a post-colonial nation. People had been reacting to these two, struggling with guilt and prejudice, trying to recreate the relationship between men and women, between the developed and developing world. It was tough but it was also wonderful because when enough people cared, things happened so fast. Both issues were about the redistribution of power, so I wrote PEARLS as a multi-layered story which related them."
