Synopsis
The author of this book delivered the 1988 Reith Lectures and here he develops his theme and examines in detail the political change taking place in the Soviet Union. The book is informed by Professor Hosking's direct experience of Soviet society and is richly illustrated with anecdotes. His analysis of a traumatised society in which issues of culture, history, the environment, religion and ethnic identity can assume enormous and sometimes explosive significance is an illuminating one, founded as it is on a deep understanding of the USSR's historical roots.
