The book is informed by Professor Hosking's direct experience of Soviet society and is richly illustrated with anecdotes. His analysis of a traumatised society in which issues of culture, history, the environment, religion and ethnic identity can assume enormous and sometimes explosive significance is an illuminating one, founded as it is on a deep understanding of the USSR's historical roots.
