Excerpt: ... THE ROMANTIC WORLD OF MUSIC CHAPTER I ADELINA PATTI 'THE glory of Madame Patti's singing romance extended like a continued story from generation to generation. To turn to its beginnings is to dip into a long-gone past, for her debut in opera was made at the Academy of Music, New York, in 1859; as a child she had concertized some years prior to that; her London debut came in 1861; as the Marquise de Caux, she figured at the court of Napoleon III. Yet at the age of fifty-two, after thirty-six years in opera, Madame Patti told of unbroken triumphs in this letter which she wrote to me from Hotel du Luxembourg, Nice, on February 21, 1895: I think when I wrote to you last I promised to send you news of my movements abroad. And you see I am faithfully keeping my word, which I can assure you is exceedingly difficult just now, as I am so busy that letter writing is almost an impossibility. We left the castle (Craig-y-Nos) about the middle of January, as I had to fulfill a concert en« gagement in Germany and Austria, before coming to Nice to sing in opera. The success of my concerts was unparalleled, and in Berlin, Vienna, and Dresden the enthusiasm of the audiences was so great that I was in danger of being torn to pieces in their frantic endeavors to get on the platform to kiss my hands and my dress! It was exceedingly flattering to me and a little overpowering. In Dresden the Crown Princess of Saxony was present, and expressed a wish to be presented to me, so amidst a scene of the wildest excitement on the part of the audience, who stood up and cheered without ceasing, I had to go to the Princess in the hall among the people, where she spoke to me for a long time and complimented me very warmly on my singing.
