KWAME ANTHONY APPIAH is Professor of Philosophy and of Afro-American Studies at Harvard University. He lives in Boston.
HENRY LOUIS GATES, JR is W. E. B. DuBois Professor of Humanities and Chair of the Department of Afro-American Studies at Harvard. He lives in Cambridge.
The authors are co-editors of Transition magazine.
