Acute myocardial infarction is the most common cause of death in the United States. Although significant progress has been made in reducing the devastating impact of AMI, the need for a concerted effort to reduce the mortality rates from AMI and acute cardiac ischemia (ACI) led to the creation of the National Heart Attack Alert Program, under the auspices of the National Institutes of Health. This handbook reports the results of the NHAAP Working Group established to evaluate the effectiveness of emergency diagnostic tests for ACI and AMI.
