When Dennis Milne - now living under an assumed identity in the Philippines - hears that his old friend and colleague Malik has been gunned down in a restaurant, he decides to go back to the violent city he once called home, and bring the murderer to book. Milne arrives in a pre-Christmas London which is cold and hostile. But he is no longer a policeman; no longer charged with keeping the peace and upholding the law. Although his old friends at the King's Cross station do not know that Milne is back in town, it soon becomes clear that his arrival has been expected by men who are after his blood. Hungry for revenge and determined to uphold his own very rough brand of justice, Milne's search for the person behind his friend's death leaves a trail of death and destruction that is more wide-reaching than even he could have expected...

... Kernick is excellent at capturing the mean streets where crack deals go down and tourists don't linger. -- Daily Mail
A Good Day To Die is a terrific novel, and well worth the wait. -- Independent on Sunday
Kernick has produced a first-rate series of contemporary hardboiled London thrillers, with ... a sympathetic character in Milne. -- Sunday Telegraph
Kernick provides fast and furious storytelling with good, original fights and lots of blood. -- Independent
This is Simon's fourth novel, originally published in 2005, and as Amazon reviewers have noted, a return to Dennis Milne. I think of it as a sort of 'What Dennis did next', and I know Simon does too.In fact, what happens to Dennis after this - and what he did before the first novel, The Business of Dying, to make him into an assassin - is something that Simon thinks about a lot. For the prequel to The Business of Dying, I'm afraid you will just have to watch this space. Another Dennis novel is planned, although its publications may be some way off.
We reissued The Business of Dying and A Good Day to Die because we knew fans were finding it difficult to get hold of the books, especially in bookshops. To re-publish them with the now established Kernick-look covers seemed to us the best way of addressing this. I hope you enjoy reading A Good Day to Die as much as I did when the manuscript first landed on my desk four years ago!
