A new edition of this popular single volume survey of the British economy from industrialisation to the present day. This key text has been updated to cover a further decade of Britain's economic and social fortunes. In particular the chapters on the industrial revolution have been extensively revised and there is a new chapter on environmental history. The Industial Age marshals a wealth of statistical and other evidence, using economic theory to analyse recent British economic change.

From the Back Cover:

"This compact, highly readable, thought-provoking survey denotes the when, how and why of Britain's economy in terms of growth, problems and changes in her industrial society from 1750 to 1985. ... The work is intended for nonspecialists, students in higher education, and for anyone wanting to further his or her knowledge in the field. The text is challenging and ought to be required reading for any university course on recent British history" HISTORY (US) of the First Edition
First published in 1989, and several times reprinted, The Industrial Age provides a clear account of the development of the British economy from 1750 to the present day, and the important social developments that accompanied it. These years saw Britain's rise to economic greatness as the world's first industrial power, and also her long economic decline; and this rise and fall gives shape and coherence to the broad sweep of Charles More's survey.
Dr More writes for the non-specialist in non-technical language. He does not shirk the basic economic analysis that underlies historical debate - one of the strengths of the book, indeed, is the way it marshals and elucidates its wealth of statistical and other evidence - but he makes the issues not only comprehensible to the layman, but interesting and involving too.
Now, in response to continuing demand, he has revised, updated and expanded his text for this fine new Second Edition. The original coverage stopped in 1985; the new version not only covers a further decade of Britain's economic and social fortunes, but has also allowed reconsideration of many of Dr More's earlier findings in the light of new research and longer perspectives.
As well as the account of recent developments, the chapters on the industrial revolution have been extensively adjusted to incorporate new thinking on the period; the chapter on family history has been completely rewritten; and there is also an innovatory chapter on environmental history. The entire text has been redesigned and reset in a larger, more handsome format; and the opportunity has also been taken to include illustrations for the first time.
"As a teacher of considerable experience, Dr More knows what students need and in this book, which is a history textbook, provides a no-nonsense, highly readable account of the development of British economy and society during the last 230 years or so. There is nothing redundant in this book. Students can open it at any chapter and come immediately on what they want ...a most useful addition to the student's armoury." OPEN HISTORY
"There is certainly a need for an up-to-date text on British economy and society since the industrial revolution. This book will be a valuable addition to the student literature" ECONOMIC HISTORY REVIEW
CHARLES MORE is Senior Lecturer in History at the Cheltenham and Gloucster College of Higher Education.
