The Jazz Piano Player: Night And Day is an essential resource for all jazz pianists, featuring 16 classic jazz standards, arranged by John Kember.

Designed both for players wanting to make the transition into jazz, as well as for jazz pianists keen to develop their own personal style, each standard is presented in two different formats: The first version of each song includes the melody, lyrics and basic chord structure, ideal for improvisation; the second version is a superb arrangement for piano solo, suitable for intermediate-level pianists. All the songs are in their standard keys, enabling pianists to play with other jazz musicians, and the free CD features performances of all the piano arrangements.

Review:
John Kember has produced some more beautifully crafted arrangements of jazz and pop standards to augment his Jazz Piano Player and Pop Piano Player collections for Faber (Music). They are a gift to anyone who wants to entertain, either alone or with others. Pupils between grade 6 and 8 can work them up, the more advanced can sight-read them. The songs are first presented in three staves: melody with words and well-voiced piano chords beneath. Chord symbols are used (and explained on a separate page), to encourage improvisation and to develop a memory for the hand shapes involved. The format could also be used to develop the skill of incorporating the melody line into the accompaniment, such as when teaching a song. Each is then turned into a characterful piano piece, with plenty of rhythmic variation and syncopation, and some fine examples of bass and inner-part melodies. A good grasp of pedalling and cantabile are needed, as heard in John s sensitive performances on the accompanying CDs. --Piano Professional Magazine, Summer 2011
