9780415105323: Women's Voices from the Rainforest (Routledge International Studies of Women and Place)

Synopsis

Women's Voices from the Rainforest explores the position of the women whose families are tearing down the rainforest. These women of Central and Latin America have been largely invisible until now, but they are at last turning their voices into action.
International development policy and its top-down culture must take much of the blame for environmental and social destruction of the rainforest. Presenting the contrasting results of different methodologies, a comprehensive literature review, and the voices of the rainforest women themselves, told in life histories, the authors argue for the adoption of "grassroots" strategies, not international solutions.

Product Description

Women's Voices from the Rainforest International development policy is responsible for much of the destruction of Central and Latin American rainforests. This explores how indigenous women are at last turning their voices to action, demanding grassroots strategies as the solution. Full description

Synopsis

The rainforests are increasingly topical in today's eco-conscious society; yet people remain ignorant of the many issues hidden by the language and methods of international development policy. Women's Voices from the Rainforest discusses these issues and analyses the causes and effects of such policy. Concentrating on the women pioneers of the poorer developing nations, the book employs a variety of contrasting methodologies - from life histories to questionnaire surveys - to suggest a range of answers to an increasing global concern. The first study of its kind to focus on the role of women in the clearing of rainforests of Central and Latin America, the authors argue for local, "grassroots" action and emphasise the need for women to play an integral role in the creation and implementation of development policy. Women's Voices from the Rainforest is an analysis not only of the development concerns faced by poorer nations, but also a discussion of the role that feminist theory can play in providing solutions to these economic and gender inequalities.

The book is an analysis of the many costly failures when 'new' lands are settled in poorer countries today and also a discussion of the role feminist theory has to play in finding solutions to such problems.
