Publicity about neuroscientific research into the dementias spreads quickly compared to the advances made in the field of care-giving. The final chapter recommends that all health care professionals working with persons with dementia should receive a joint "core" training programme to which professional-specific training could be added. Common themes running through the chapters are that care must be stage-specific; that professionals must work with the abilities that have been spared; and that lifespan information is needed to plan optimal individualized care.
