Britain's departure from Hong Kong in 1997 marks the end of a century of Imperial retreat and relative decline in the world. The Empire and Commonwealth, relations with major allies like the United States, and rivalries with Germany and Russia all receive attention alongside domestic influences in Whitehall and the Whitehall and the persistent British desire for peace and order as the way to maximize trade and investments and secure wealth and social stability at home.
