Criticism, confidered in its antient and nobleft Office of doing jufiice to, the merits of great writers, more efpe cially in works of poetry and inven tion, demands, to its perfecft execution, thefe two qualities: 4 capable Of penetrating the fundamental reafons of excellence in every different fpecies of compofition; and a firong imagination, the parent of what we call true fajze, enabling the critic to feel the full force of his author's excellence himfelf, and to iinprefs a lively fenfe of it upon others. Each of thefe abili ties is neceffary. For by means of philofophy, criticifm, which were otherwife a vague and fuperficial thing.
