WE obje�'t not againli paying all due te [pe�'t to the primitive worthies, who were called aftertbe name of Chrifi, and boy nored that name by their faithful labor: in the fervice of the gofpel. But we te member, our Savior has bid os call no man matter on earth, as we have a maf ner in heaven, the only one he will allow us to own by that name. We cannot there fore but judge it unwarrantable to take our fentimenu, relative to any chrifiian truth, from meer men, however pious, learned, or ancient 3 or however aflembled in coun cils or Iynods. This, we imagine, would be a dilhonor to Chrifi, the founder and revealer of our holy religion. He has given us the writings of the evangelifis and apoiiles to be the rule of our faith and pra�licc and it is, as we think. {0 perfe�'t and fufiicient an one, that we have no need to have recourfe to buman, and therefore fallible, writers, either ancient or modern yea, it is our firm perfuafion, that all that delivered for the truth as it is in c fus by the fathers of whatever age, Ration, country, or chara�ter, ought to be judged of by this facred and unerring rule and if what they lay does not agree here with, there is, (0 far, no light nor truth in.
