En étudiant les auteurs qui ont traité de la philosophie de l'histoire, j'ai été amené à lire Buchez. Il est bien peu d'auteurs de ce genre sur qui l'on n'ait pas déjà beaucoup écrit; Buchez, au contraire, est peu connu comme historien philosophe. Un livre récent 1 a parlé de lui comme socio logue mais l'étude substantielle qu'il renferme sur Buchez fondateur du catholicisme social est faite à un point de vue différent de celui où je me suis placé. J'ai cru bon de ne pas reprendre l'oeuvre d'un auteur très connu, d'un des maîtres de la pensée comme l'on dit. Il est bon, au contraire, de présenter les vues de ceux qui, sans être des génies, sont dignes d'attention. Dans la période contem poraine du reste, où la pensée se socialise de jour en jour davantage par le fait que ceux qui écrivent sent toujours plus nombreux, il faut tenir compte de tous les essais pour peu qu'ils contiennent quelques idées intéressantes. On le fait pour les oeuvres d'art et de littérature; pour quoi n'agirait-on pas de même pour les écrits scientifiques?
