Synopsis:

This is an edition of Thomas Middleton's A Game at Chess , written in 1624, a political drama played to very large audiences in London for a short period before being closed by the Government because of its satires on contemporary court and international personalities and policies. The appearance of this edition should add much important evidence to the debate about Middleton's contribution to Shakespeare's plays, given what may be learnt from this first complete text in his own hand. This volume also contains an edited text of those portions of another manuscript of the play (in the Huntingdon Library, California) which are in Middleton's hand. This book is intended for students (graduate level and above) and scholars of Renaissance drama and Shakespeare, textual and bibliographical problems, and political and social history.
