Justice Harry A. Blackmun, author of the majority opinion in Roe v. Wade, was the pivotal figure in one of the most contentious decisions in Supreme Court history and indeed the most divisive issue facing the Court today.

Tinsley E. Yarbrough is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Political Science at East Carolina University. He is the author of ten books, including David Hackett Souter: Traditional Republican on the Rehnquist Court, (OUP 2005), The Rehnquist Court and the Constitution (OUP 2000), and Judge Frank Johnson and Human Rights in Alabamas, for which he won an ABA Silver Gavel Award. He lives in Greenville, North Carolina.
