About the Author:

Charlotte Lennox (1729-1804) was born in Gibralter, lived for a time in New York and later became a ladies' companion in London. An unsuccessful actor, she wrote two collections of poetry, five novels and two plays. Samuel Johnson thought her superior to his other female literary friends, such as Hannah More and Fanny Burney.
