This book covers the most common paediatric problems encountered in the Accident and Emergency department. The contents includes cardiopulmonary resuscitation, major trauma, minor trauma, fractures and other orthopaedic problems, burns, scalds and poisoning. Child abuse and its recognition and management is also described. The diagnosis and management of ENT, respiratory, neurological, haematological and dermatological problems are outlined, and there are special sections on practical procedures and on children brought in dead. The book concludes with a section on the legal aspects of dealing with children in hospital. Emphasis has been placed on the emergency management of serious illness and injury and on the management of common problems. In many instances, further management is described both for readers studying for the Accident and Emergency Fellowship examination and also in case specialist help is otherwise occupied. The book seeks to serve as a practical reference to all junior doctors and nurses working in an A&E department.

Review:
This is a welcome and long-awaited publication on a specialist subject which has hitherto not been represented by a dedicated book. The overall impression is of a very thorough and well-planned book with no serious errors or omissions ... Highly recommended reading for all GP trainees and SHOs about to embark on their Accident and Emergency Department attachments: it is inexpensive and good value. (Journal of the Royal Naval Medical Service, 1993; 79)

This medium-sized book is ideal for a departmental reference book. It is well presented with clear headings in bold type and a good index, and is extremely easy to use ... an excellent book for junior nurses and doctors working in the A & E department ... A well thought out and highly recommended book. (Sue Pearce, Accident and Emergency Nursing, Vol. 2, No. 2, April 1994)
From the Back Cover:
This book covers the most common paediatric problems encountered in the Accident and Emergency Department. The contents include cardiopulmonary resuscitation, major trauma, minor trauma, fractures and other orthopaedic problems, burns, scalds, and poisoning. Child abuse and its recognition and management are described. Emphasis has been placed on the emergency management of serious illness and injury and on the management of common problems. In many instances, further management is described both for readers studying for the Accident and Emergency fellowship examination and also in cases where specialist help is unavailable. This edition includes a revised section on paediatric resuscitation which summarizes the latest guidelines in this area. The section on major trauma has been extended to follow the Advanced Paediatric Life Support guidelines, and the information on fractures has been altered into tabular form to allow for ease of use and comparison between possible diagnoses.
