The New English Bible is a translation of the whole Bible undertaken by the major Christian bodies of the British Isles. It is not a revision of the Authorised Version, nor is it intended to replace it. As with the original publication of the authorised version of 1611, the books collectively known as the Apocrypha are made available at the same time as the Old Testament; their translation has been done with equal care for accuracy and clear presentation. The whole work was done under the authority of the Joint Committee whose members represented a wide cross section of Churches including Church of England. In the latter stages, the Committee was joined by observers representing the Roman Catholic Church in England and Scotland.
