Josephine Alibrandi is seventeen, and in her final year of school. Dealing with her mum and the ways of her Nonna are daunting enough as she prepares for her exams. But Josie is about to discover real life gets in the way of her carefully made plans. She suddenly has to deal with having her father around for the first time in her life, falling in love and uncovering her family's secret background. Despite all the turmoil, this is the year Josie discovers that emancipation doesn't mean escaping from your past.

Review:
"A novel to rejoice in, a story from the heart." (Australian Bookseller+Publisher)

"This is such a great book!! It's a must read." (Amazon)

"The search for self in adolescence is torturous, comical, clumsy and universal. Australian teen Josephine Alibrandi's pursuit is no exception. She's a brilliant, insightful, under-privileged 17-year-old minority student in a wealthy Catholic high school who also has the significant disadvantage of being illegitimate. Marcella Russo performs Josie's sassy first-person narrative with such dexterity and ease that her character blossoms before us. The listener becomes her closest confidante as she whispers her secrets, groans in despair, crows in triumph, cries in grief, all with enormous authenticity. Of extraordinary note is Russo's adept reading of Josie's Italian Nonna, with her thick accent, sharp edges, deeply held secrets and great passion for Josie." (AudioFile Magazine)
From the Author:
It's about relationships between women from 3 generations.
This book is not just about sex and drugs. It's about how hard it is to fit in when your different. this book expresses a girl's life and the phases she goes through. I wrote this book because of my Nonna emmigrating to Australia. I wanted to know how it felt to live without a close member of the family near you. I never knew I was going to sit down and write about racism or suicide. If you liked this book, watch out, because a movie's coming your way.

Lots of love, Melina

Book Description Paperback. Condition: Fair. 260 pages. Cover worn. For as long as she can remember, seven teen year old Josephine Alibrandi has believed her life to be any thing but fortunate. Born to a single impecunious mother from a s trong Italian background, Josie has never met her father and does n't fit in at her elitist Sydney Catholic school on account of he r scholarship and inability to conform. She also refuses to embra ce any part of her heritage, including her grandmother. However, to make her existence even more of a nightmare, she is constantly reminded of these factors by arch- nemesis Poison Ivy. Not only is Ivy her superior as school captain, but she is also after the charming, white-collar, extremely wealthy, John Barton. The very same man Josie believes she is destined to be with. Just when Jos ie thinks her life couldn't possibly become anymore convoluted, s he is finding herself more and more attracted to blue-collar bad boy Jacob Coote.
