...Bad Timing is a love story, but it’s also about friendship, and how the jealousy and resentfulness that exists between best friends can be as important and difficult as romantic love. What happens is, the heat of the central character’s long-term close friendship brings her tepid new love affair to boiling point.
The book is completely made up, but the sub-plot - about a small magazine imploding - was inspired by the several small magazines I jinxed to death by working for them before I started writing novels. The first was a satirical football magazine. The last was the Modern Review; I worked there in its sparky final days. None of these places was at all like Brazen, the magazine in the book, but there’s an edginess to small magazines – while all offices have office scandals, arguments and secrets, in small magazines the petits mals are of massive importance. They make the magazine run and can close it as quickly. I wanted an emotional work place where nothing is spoken and everything is destroyed by veiled pride and anger as the backdrop for a cool love story in which the problem is that no one seems to care enough but can’t stop talking about it.
