This report presents the findings of a survey of the diet and nutrition status of young people aged 4 to 18 years living in private households in Great Britain carried out between January and December 1997. The information was collected from interviews, 7 day dietary and physical activity records, physical measurements and analysis of blood and urine samples. Results are given for food consumption, intakes of energy and over 40 nutrients and for more than 40 biochemical indices of nutritional status. Nutrient intakes are compared with reference values where these are available. Results are also presented for young people classified by charcteristics such as region, social class of head of household and income.
The OFFICE FOR NATIONAL STATISTICS (ONS) is the government department that provides UK statistical and registration services. ONS is responsible for producing a wide range of key economic and social statistics which are used by policy makers across government to create evidence-based policies and monitor performance against them. The Office also builds and maintains data sources both for itself and for its business and research customers. It makes statistics available so that everyone can easily assess the state of the nation, the performance of government, and their own position.
