Heneman and Judge’s Staffing, 5th Edition, is based on a comprehensive staffing model. Components of the model include staffing models and strategy, staffing support systems (legal compliance, planning, job analysis and rewards), core staffing systems (recruitment, selection, employment), and staffing system and retention management. Up-to-date research and business practices are the hallmarks of this market leading text. In-depth applications (cases and exercises) at the end of chapters provide students with skill-building and practice in key staffing activities and decision-making. A comprehensive running case involving a fictitious retailing organization provides even greater opportunity for in-depth analysis and skill building. Students also have the opportunity to address ethical issues at the end of each chapter.

Chapter 1 contains a new definition of staffing, as well as more emphasis on staffing strategy, the importance of staffing for organizational effectiveness, and key staffing strategy decisions regarding staffing levels and staffing quality. These changes reflect the most up-to-date staffing research and practice and demonstrate the authors' commitment to providing fresh, timely material for the reader.
Based on reviewer feedback and author research, the previous edition Chapter 2 (economic conditions, labor markets and labor unions) has been removed, and condensed coverage of the material is included in Chapter 3 entitled Planning.
A new chapter (14) entitled, Retention Management, has been added to reflect the importance of not only acquiring but also keeping high value employees-a major lesson learned by companies the past several years.
Extensive legal updates have been included to provide students with the most current information and reinforce the importance of legal issues in staffing practice. In general, the text has extensive coverage of laws and regulations, including the new affirmative action requirements.
External recruitment and external selection chapters have been thoroughly updated with emphasis on technology and hot issues like online recruiting and testing, reflecting the growing importance of information technology to the staffing process.
Extensive references are found at end of each chapter, drawn from behavioral, managerial, practitioner, and legal sources for students to perform additional research.
Numerous descriptions (many new!) and examples of staffing practices throughout the book help students relate chapter concepts to the real world situations.
Cases and exercises at the end of each chapter can be used for class discussion, projects or paper assignments.
Web site addresses are included for laws and regulations, government agencies, job search resources, and professional associations to encourage students to think about the web as a real world research tool. A list of key Web sites appears on the inside front and back covers.
