Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla, was born in Wadowice, Poland on 18th May 1920. After university he went to the seminary of the diocese of Cracow, being ordained priest in 1946, and then gained degrees in philosophy at the pontifical Athenaeum in Rome in 1948, and in theology at the University of Cracow. He began to teach ethics at the Catholic Unversity of Lublin in 1954. Under Cardinal Wyszynski he was consecrated Bishop of the Church of Ombi in 1958, and became Archbishop of Cracow in 1964. In 1967 Pope Paul VI appointed him Cardinal and, after the death of John Paul I, he was elected Pope on 16th October 1978.
