In this challenging new book, the Pope delivers his ‘position statement’ for the year 2000 on a broad range of topics. He draws on a variety of materials, both published and unpublished, utilising, as always, his extensive knowledge of world affairs and perceptive understanding of the human condition.

He speaks directly to all those concerned about the progress of the human race into the next millenium. The areas covered include: Faith (includes challenges of science and secularisation), Church (the laity, women and hierarchy), Prayer, Love (sex, divorce, family, feminism, contraception, population control), History (free will and divine omnipotence, rationalism and life after death), Evil (original sin, money and power), Work (social justice, limits of capitalism, unemployment), World (human rights, politics, Africa), Peace (ecology, disarmament), Religious (ecumenism, relations with Judaism and Islam, religious freedom).

From the Back Cover:

Ten commandments for a new millennium ...

No one is more concerned about the progress of the human race as it enters the third millennium than Pope John Paul II. He predicts a time in which there may be a great reawakening to the Gospel of Christ. On the other hand, he documents the ever-increasing threats to human life.

Collecting his writings and speeches – published and unpublished – under ten major headings, 'Agenda for the Third Millennium ' shows the Pope's extensive knowledge of world affairs and acute understanding of the human condition.

In what amounts to a sequel to his best-selling 'Crossing the Threshold of Hope', John Paul II addresses humanity's most pressing questions. He is unafraid to discuss controversial topics such as the role of women, contraception, money, unemployment, ecology and human rights.

"This book ... has that wide overarching vision which many people find absent from modern life. A best of Wojtyla."
THE GUARDIAN

... from the pen of Pope John Paul II

About the Author:

Pope John Paul II, Karol Wojtyla, was born in Wadowice, Poland on 18th May 1920. After university he went to the seminary of the diocese of Cracow, being ordained priest in 1946, and then gained degrees in philosophy at the pontifical Athenaeum in Rome in 1948, and in theology at the University of Cracow. He began to teach ethics at the Catholic Unversity of Lublin in 1954. Under Cardinal Wyszynski he was consecrated Bishop of the Church of Ombi in 1958, and became Archbishop of Cracow in 1964. In 1967 Pope Paul VI appointed him Cardinal and, after the death of John Paul I, he was elected Pope on 16th October 1978.
