Joining the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve in 1939 as a sergeant pilot, he was to serve with Fighter Command squadrons throughout the war, scoring his 38th and final victory in September 1944 whilst patrolling over the Rhine with 443 Squadron. By the end of the war he had risen to the rank of Group Captain and when he retired from the Service in 1966 he did so as an Air Vice-Marshall.

Squadron which became part of the Tangmere Wing led by Douglas Bader, in 1942 he commanded 610 County of Chester Squadron and 1943 promoted Wing Cdr. to lead the Canadian Spitfire Wing on over 140 sorties over North West Europe. In March 1944 he took command of 144 Canadian Spitfire Wing of three squadrons, on fighter bomber operations to soften up the French coastal areas. Flying from Ford on the Sussex coast they were part of the fighter protection for the invasion fleet in the first few days until the first Normandy airfield was built at St Crois sur Mer and they became the first Normandy based wing, eventually gaining air superiority while the Typhoon squadrons provided ground support as aerial artillery.
