Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Lafcadio Hearn was a prolific 19th-century writer with diverse experiences. He was born in Greece; educated in Ireland, France, and England; and thereafter resided in the United States, the French West Indies, and Japan. He is best known for his nonfiction, primarily his essays and newspaper columns, though he also wrote numerous stories that drew on the lore of different cultures. But he will always be remembered as the American writer who first wrote extensively about Japan and made Asiatic culture accessible to British and American readers. This reference is a comprehensive guide to Hearn's life and career.Included in the volume are hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries for individual works by Hearn and collections of his writings, for members of his family, and for the colleagues and acquaintances who figured prominently in his life. The entries summarize his views, reveal his keen perception, and demonstrate the breadth of his musings. Entries often cite works for further reading, and the volume also includes a bibliography. While the book is first and foremost a guide to Hearn, it also shows how Japanese society was first presented to the West. This reference is a comprehensive guide to Hearn's life and career.Included in the volume are hundreds of alphabetically arranged entries for individual works by Hearn and collections of his writings, for members of his family, and for the colleagues and acquaintances who figured prominently in his life. A lithographic print in black & pink tint, sheet size:45.7 x 54.7, image size: 22.3 x 28 cm., pencil signed by Kuwahara, excellent condition, glazed and wood framed.* RARE & OBSCURE FIRST & ONLY ORIGINAL EDITION * . *** **** *** . . THE ORIGINAL HEARN BUST PORTRAIT & DEATH MASK FROM 1904 . . . DRAWN BY KUWAHARA ROKURO [ROBERT] IN [1930] . . . BASED ON A PHOTO OF HEARN'S DEATH PHOTOGRAPH, 1904 . . . ORIGINAL ARTIST'S PENCIL SIGNED EXAMPLE . * NOTE: This is the ORIGINAL print example, pencil signed by the artist Kuwahara, not some cheap, fake photo copy ! . *** LAFCADIO HEARN [1850-1904]: . Hearn died in 1904 at Tokyo. His 'memorial portrait' or 'mourning portrait" photograph was used as the frontispiece for some books about Hearn immediately after his death. It was from that photograph Kuwahara drew this bust. . *** THE ARTIST: KUWAHARA ROKURO [ROBERT] 1901-1964: . Kuwahara was a Japanese born commercial artist. His family immigrated to Santa Barbara, California in 1910, where he was a cartoonist at Walt Disney, MGM, CBS Terrytoons studios. . During the war like all Japanese & Japanese-Americans he was sent to an internment camp, where he taught art classes. After the war he returned to commercial art work on the east coast. . *** THE PUBLISHER: The work was states just below the Hearn image, lower left edge is printed: "Copyright 1930, William Edwin Rudge." Rudge was the publisher. At the Hearn image lower right corner is printed "Robert Kuwahara fecit," ["made by"]. Above which is his pencil signature. . Below the Hearn image in the center is: "LAFCADIO HEARN 1850-1904" printed in black ink as are all of the other printed texts. . NOTE: Rudge was also the publisher the 1926 fine & beautiful typographical Hearn title: INSECTS AND GREEK POETRY in a Limited Edition of 550 copies. . While this item does not have any Limitation Statement, it was surely printed in a small edition and had a small distribution. . *** Color photos are posted to our website. . *** CONDITION: This is printed on a large sheet of stiff paper. There is a mend in the upper left margin. There are a couple of small closed tears, a couple of edge chips, else the sheet has evidence of two brown Kraft gummed tapes partially removed on the lower back edge. All of the above are matted out in the frame. . The image is excellent, with good impression & registry. There is a tiny, feint & small mark at the left margin near Hearn's neck which erasure has been attempted, it is about 3 mm x 1 cm, not greatly distractive. . There are no other flaws or issues. . The work is framed in a gilt wood frame and glazed with a plain white mat. The work is ready for library or museum display. . Note: spine.jpg is a photo of the framed & glazed item, it has some of the usual 'glare' associated with glazed items which are not actually present on the print at all. Glare is unavoidable when taking photos of glazed art work. . *** REFERENCE: . See encyclopedia.densho-org/Robert_Kuwahara . *.
