Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Unclear. FOREWORD BY ALLAN QUATERMAIN Now that this book is printed, and about to be given to the world, a sense of its shortcomings, both in style and contents, weighs very heavily upon me. As regards the latter, I can only say that it does not pretend to be a full account of everything we did and saw. There are many things connected with our journey into Kukuanaland that I should have liked to dwell upon at length, which, as it is, have been scarcely alluded to. Amongst these are the curious legends which I collected about the chain armour that saved us from destruction in the great battle of Loo, and also about the "Silent Ones" or Colossi at the mouth of the stalactite cave. Again, if I had given way to my own impulses, I should have wished to go into the differences, some of which are to my mind very suggestive, between the Zulu and Kukuana dialects. Also a few pages might have been given bp profitably to the consideration of the indigenous flora and fauna of Kukuanaland. Then there remains the most interesting subject that, as it is, has only been touched on incidentally- of the magnificent system of military organisation in force in that country, which, in my opinion, is much superior to that inaugurated by Chaka in Zululand, inasmuch as it permits of even more rapid mobilisation, and does not necessitate the employment of the pernicious system of forced celibacy. Lastly, I have scarcely spoken of the domestic and family customs of the Kukuanas, many of which are exceedingly quaint, or of their proficiency in the art of smelting and welding metals. This science they carry to consider able perfection, of which a good example is to be seen in their "tollas," or heavy throwing knives, the backs of these weapons being made of hammered iron, and the edges of beautiful steel welded with great skill on to the iron frames. The fact of the matter is, I thought, with Sir Henry Curtis and Captain Good, that the best plan would be to tell my story in a plain, straightforward manner, and to leave these matters to be dealt with subsequently in whatever way ultimately may appear to be desirable. In the meanwhile I shall, of course, be delighted to give all information in my power to anybody interested in such things. And now it only remains for me to offer apologies for my blunt way of writing. I can but say in excuse of it that I am more accus tomed to handle a rifle than a pen, and cannot make any pretence to the grand literary flights and flourishes which I see in novelsfor some times I like to read a novel. I suppose they the flights and flourishesare desirable, and I regret not being able to supply them; but at the same time I cannot help thinking that simple things are always the most impressive, and that books are easier to understand when they are written in plain language, though perhaps I have no right to set up an opinion on such a matter. "A sharp spear," runs the Kukuana saying, "needs no polish"; and on the same principle I venture to hope that a true story, however strange it may be, does not require to be decked out in fine words. ------------------------------------------ Sweet book, 369 pages ---------- Orders of $100.00 or more are shipped using tracked courier delivery services. Dover #T584. The spine is concave. The interior text pages tight and white. No marks of any sort. These three great novels of African adventure continue to be favorite reading of those who love a thrilling tale. Perhaps the reason that they continue to be part of the public imagination, delighting each new generation afresh, is that they are filled with qualities close to the human heart. Adventure, discovery, desire for immortality, terror, search for the primitive, for what is unadorned by civilization. As Kipling said of Haggard's work, It goes, and it grips, and it moves with all the freshness of youth. Haggard had lived for years among primitive peoples in Africa, and his knowledge of the Dark Continent was matched by few men. Yet beyond his personal knowledge of Africa, his experience of savage life and wild lands, and his faculty for making us believe impossible tales-lies a feeling for the supernatural. Adventure alone was not enough for Haggard. As he said, The thing must have a heart; mere adventures are not enough-I can turn them out by the peck. About She, one of the great mythical creations of the late 19th century, he said The only clear notion that I had was that of an immortal woman inspired by immortal love, and it came faster than my poor aching hand could set it down. Kipling simply said, You did not write She, you know. Something wrote it through you. His novels have been called parables, asking What are science, learning, and consciousness of knowledge and power, in the face of Omnipotence? They have been called romance. And they have been called excitingly alive and imaginative by almost everyone who has ever picked up a volume from Robert L. Stevenson to George Orwell.

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Here is an instant collection of 39 Tauchnitz editions of H. Rider Haggard Novels. Comprised of both hardback and softback editions. There are 21 hardbacks; 19 in original publisher's binding(!) and 2 rebound. There are also an additional 18 softbacks. Overall a great looking group, almost all are in VG condition; many of these are very rare. All are listed in the Whatmore bibliography. Lengthy details below, and please inquire for additional needed info or more pics. Likely the largest Tauchnitz grouping of Haggard's in the US. The following 19 hardbacks are in the publisher's original binding of red paper boards over red cloth spine with spine lettered in gold and decorated in brown and black, cover stamped with publisher's design in blind, top edge stained red, and with beige end papers. All in VG or better condition and have slight forward lean [from stacking], modest wear and/or fading, and may have names or bookseller pencils on prelims. Any major defect will be mentioned. Some are first printings and others are reprints as can be denoted from the Editions in print page, and so I am listing the copyright dates as well as the quantity of titles listed to give a better idea of the printing. King Solomon's Mines T2386 [1886, 35 titles], She in two volumes T2445/2446 [both 1887, 34 titles], Jess in two volumes T2451/2452 [1887, 29 titles], The Witch's Head in two volumes T2482/2483 [1887, 17 titles], Maiwa's Revenge T2530 [1888, 23 titles], Cleopatra in two volumes T2592/2593 [1889, 27 volumes], Allan Quatermain in two volumes T2742/2743 [1887, 33 titles], Dawn it two volumes T2825/2826 [1892, 13 titles, 1" cloth split at top of spine on V1], Ayesha in two volumes T3848/3849 [1905, 29 titles], The Way of the Spirit in two volumes T3883/3884 [1906, 30 titles], Red Eve T4287 [1911, 33 titles]. Also another set of Ayesha lacking half title pages and rebound in maybe white calf, good condition but kinda shabby with toning, foxing, and slightly warped boards. The paperbacks average VG condition with varying degrees of paper toning and spine creases, edge wear, and small tears or a bit of over separation. They mostly have a publisher's catalog or list of latest editions at rear which I will denote along with any notable defects. She [only Vol. 1 of the two volume set, T2445 [1887, May 1919, ink mark on cover], The Witch's Head in two volumes T2482/2483 [1887, September and July 1902], The Wizard T3191 [1897, Feb. 1914], Doctor Therne T3336 [1899, Feb. 1899, ink spots on cover], Swallow in two volumes T3355/3356 [1899, Autumn 1920], Black Heart and White Heart T3440 [1900, Aug. 1900, sticker and soil on cover], Ayesha in two volumesT2849/3850 [1905, Sept and Nov 1922, owners stamp on 1st page dated 1923], The Lady of Blossholme T4158 [1909, My 1924], Red Eve T4287 [1911, July 1913, tape at spine ends], Child of Storm T4391 [1913, Feb 1913, spine fully taped], Wisdom's Daughter T4602 [1923, May 1923], Queen of the Dawn T4686 [1925, May 1925], The Treasure of the Lake T4755 [1926, Dec 1926, 1st signature a bit loose].

Allan's Wife: Seaside Library # 1248 deposited in LOC on Nov. 22, 1889 [Scott pg. 20] predates UK edition of Dec. 1889. Average condition for this lot is Very Good.
