XXXV, 366 pp. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A perfect, very clean copy. Greek text. - Our information on the life of Asterius, bishop of Amasea in Pontus, is far from perfect. None of his contemporaries mentions him. His name does not occur in the church-histories of Socrates, Sozomen and Theodoret. Only at the second council of Nicea (787) does he gain a place in the history of the church. At this council, called together in order to condemn the iconoclasts, a passage from his first, and the entire eleventh homily are quoted as arguments against the iconoclasts. During the fourth session of this council a monk called Thomas, from the monastery of Chenolakkos near Constantinople, takes the floor and says: []. the end of the ensuing discussion Theodoret, bishop of Catana, says: []. Once again Asterius is quoted during this assembly, when dean Epiphanius says that faith without works is dead: []. Data about his life and the time in which he lived, can only be gathered from those of his homilies which were preserved, and from the excerpts Photius handed down to us from the homilies, parts of which are missing.
