The title translates as Heroines, and it's a series of poems in the voices of women from Greek and Roman myth - including Phaedra, Medea, Penelope and Ariadne - addressed to the men they love. It has been claimed as both the first book of dramatic monologues and the first of epistolary fiction. It's also a radical text in its literary transvestism, and the way it often presents the same story from very different, subjective perspectives. For a long time it was Ovid's most influential work, loved by Chaucer, Dante, Marlowe, Shakespeare and Donne, and translated by Dryden and Pope. Clare Pollard's new translation rediscovers Ovid's Heroines for the 21st century, with a cast of women who are brave, bitchy, sexy, suicidal, horrifying, heartbreaking and surprisingly modern. Two of the most popular poetry books of recent times have been Ted Hughes's new version of Ovid's Metamorphoses, and Carol Ann Duffy's The World's Wife, dramatic monologues by women from myth and history giving their side of the story. Clare Pollard's new take on Ovid's Heroines is another book in that vein, bringing classic tales to life for modern readers.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Ovid's moving poems on the torments of loveIn the twenty-one poems of the Heroides, Ovid gave voice to the heroines and heroes of epic and myth. These deeply moving literary epistles reveal the happiness and torment of love, as the writers tell of their pain at separation, forgiveness of infidelity or anger at betrayal. The faithful Penelope wonders at the suspiciously long absence of Ulysses, while Dido bitterly reproaches Aeneas for too eagerly leaving her bed to follow his destiny, and Sappho - the only historical figure portrayed here - describes her passion for the cruelly rejecting Phaon. In the poetic letters between Paris and Helen the lovers seem oblivious to the tragedy prophesied for them, while in another exchange the youthful Leander asserts his foolhardy eagerness to risk his life to be with his beloved Hero. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Publius Ovidius Naso; 20 March 43 BC - AD 17/18), known as Ovid in the English-speaking world, was a Roman poet who lived during the reign of Augustus. He was a contemporary of Virgil and Horace. He is best known for the Metamorphoses, a 15-book continuous mythological narrative written in the meter of epic, and for collections of love poetry in elegiac couplets, especially the Amores ("Love Affairs") and Ars Amatoria ("The Art of Love"). His poetry was much imitated during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and greatly influenced Western art and literature. The Metamorphoses remains one of the most important sources of classical mythology. Ovid is traditionally ranked alongside Virgil and Horace, his older contemporaries, as one of the three canonic poets of Latin literature. He was the first major Roman poet to begin his career during the reign of Augustus, and the Imperial scholar Quintilian considered him the last of the Latin love elegists. He enjoyed enormous popularity, but, in one of the mysteries of literary history, he was sent by Augustus into exile in a remote province on the Black Sea, where he remained until his death. Ovid himself attributes his exile to carmen et error, "a poem and a mistake", but his discretion in discussing the causes has resulted in much speculation among scholars. Ovid's prolific poetry includes the Heroides, a collection of verse epistles written as though by mythological heroines to the lovers who abandoned them; the Fasti, an incomplete six-book exploration of Roman religion with a calendar structure; and the Tristia and Epistulae ex Ponto, two collections of elegies in the form of complaining letters from his exile. His shorter works include the Remedia Amoris ("Cure for Love"), the curse-poem Ibis, and an advice poem on women's cosmetics. He wrote a lost tragedy, Medea, and mentions that some of his other works were adapted for staged performance. From the introduction: "This must be the first English auction sale of the twentieth century to contain such a large number of Spanish literary manuscripts, many of them derived via Heber or Thorpe from a few notable collections: that of the Valencian savant, Gregorio Mayans y Siscar (part of his library was brought to England by the bookseller Vicente Salva, who opened a shop at 124 Regent Street In 1825); of Juan de Iriarte, probably also of the Marques de Astorga (who seems to have been a political refugee in France) and of La Serna Santander. The Spanish manuscripts are followed by no less than thirty-nine in Portuguese or of Portuguese interest. The most remarkable is the volume containing unpublished autograph Cronicles by Gaspar Correa, author of Lendas da India, composed in India in 1532-3, as well as a translation of Ovid's Heroides by a Portuguese soldier in India (lot 1339). Other lots of interest include the diplomatic correspondence of the Papal Nuncio in Lisbon, 1686-90 (lot 1360), unpublished diaries of Francisco Xavier de Oliveyra, "the Portuguese Protestant" (lot 1362) and an account of the disastrous defeat of King Sebastian's army in Morocco in 1578 (lot 1363). Some of the Jugoslav manuscripts stem from the circle of Marko Marulic. the leading Croat humanist, and seem to have belonged to the Franciscan convent in Split. Eighteen Greek manuscripts complete the sale. Here the outstanding lot is the large unpublished collection of papers of Cyril Lucaris, donor of the Codez Alexandrinus to James I and the most remarkable Patriarch of Constantinople since 1453." Scholars have long debated the source of Chaucer's inspiration for this poem, with no consensus emerging. The author examines evidence from the poem itself and from Chaucer's other works to argue that the "Heroides" by Ovid was the primary influence on "Anelida and Arcite". The author provides a close reading of both works, identifying numerous thematic and stylistic similarities that support this claim. In doing so, the author sheds new light on Chaucer's creative process and the literary context in which he wrote. This book will be of interest to scholars of Chaucer and medieval literature, as well as anyone interested in the sources of literary inspiration. The Heroides are a series of fictional verse epistles that Roman poet Ovid wrote from the point of view of mythological women to their absent husbands or lovers. The author produces an embellished translation of Epistle XVI, a letter in which Laodamia, wife of Proteus, implores him not to go to battle in the Trojan War. She relates her fears and premonitions, but her pleas are ultimately unsuccessful. The book not only provides the translation but also includes extensive historical and literary annotations that place the work within its broader context and provide insights into its themes and ideas. Through careful analysis and interpretation of the text, this book deepens understanding of Ovid's Heroides and the role of women in classical literature, making it a valuable resource for scholars and general readers alike.
