Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Rowling, Joanne Kathleen (1997) 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', UK uncorrected proof, published by Bloomsbury. Signed and inscribed by the author on the dedication page: "to Catriona long time since I have seen one of these! J.K. Rowling". Housed in a beautiful yellow full leather solander case for protection and stunning presentation on the shelf. Provenance: Catriona was the children's book buyer at a famous large Edinburgh book shop from 1995-2000. She was given this proof by the publisher's agent in 1997 and, from the start, advocated the story based on its merits. This copy was personally inscribed by Rowling during a visit to the shop in 1999. Condition: a very good specimen not restored in any way. Light creases to the wraps and shelf wear. Small ink stain to top page block. Internally clean. According to Errington [2015] and Bloomsbury records 200 proof copies have been printed. This stands against a first hardback print run of 500 copies intended for the library market and 5,150 paperbacks for the general public. Therefore, this is one of the rarest collectable Harry Potter book as not many proofs have survived the passage of time, made even scarcer by the fact that this is a signed and inscribed copy. We have only ever seen a handful of signed uncorrected proofs of the first Harry Potter titles on the market. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s).

ROWLING: "to Davey and Tommy great to meet you at last! J.K. Rowling." The recipient's mother is Jenny Brown, Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Brown served as Director of Literature at the Scottish Arts Council (SAC) from 1996 through 2002. This copy comes from the Brown family via Bonhams (sale December 1, 2021, lot 165) We find just four other inscribed presentation copies of the first printing with documented provenance in public auction records. Only two of these four has a literary association (see below). In 1996 Jenny Brown, the newly appointed Director of Literature at the SAC, led an initiative to establish a new program to support authors of children's literature. The first applicant to the award for children's literature was J.K. Rowling. In 1996 Rowling received an £8000 grant from the SAC. Rowling later told the chairman of the Arts Council, Magnus Linklater, that the award "transformed her life by allowing her to pay for childcare during the whole of a year, it had allowed her to complete the second Harry Potter volume at a time when she had no prospects of success for the first" (Magnus Linklater, Prospect Magazine). NOTE: The other four inscribed presentation copies of the first printing with documented provenance found in auction records comprise: a copy inscribed to Bryony Evens, office manager at Christopher Little, Rowling's literary agency (Bonhams, 2020); a copy inscribed to a personal friend from Rowling's daughter's daycare in Edinburgh (Bonhams, 2017); a softcover printing inscribed to Rowling's father (Sotheby's, 2003); and a softcover printing inscribed to the first journalist to interview Rowling (Heritage, 2010). Bloomsbury, 1997. Octavo, publisher's pictorial wrappers (misspelling "Philospher"), paperback issue (number sequence from 10 to 1); faint trace of damp at lower margin of opening and final few leaves, typical paper toning, few creases and abrasions, laminate separated in places with minor loss. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Joanne (Kathleen) Rowling (1997) 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone', UK first edition, first printing, in paperback, published by Bloomsbury. Together with an original handwritten card signed by Rowling. Both items housed in a bespoke full leather solander box. The book: this is the true paperback first edition with all first issue points present: the Wendy Cooling blurb on the front panel; the rear panel bears the typo with an 'o' missing in "Philosopher's" and "Hogwarts School of Wizardry and Witchcraft" instead of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Page 53 lists 'wand' twice as called for. No dust jacket as issued. One of only 5,150 copies printed of which the majority have not survived the passage of time in such beautiful unread condition. The book is in fine condition, unread and with an unbroken spine. There are no previous owner's marks, no stamps, no bookplates. No creasing to spine or wraps whatsoever. No fading to the spine as often seen. Slight toning of paper commensurate with age. This is a natural process due to the cheap paper stock used by the publisher and inevitable over time. A superb copy, and we have never seen a better specimen. The card: handwritten on both sides, measuring 5.75″ x 4.25″, on Rowling's personal stationery card, no date but circa 2001, and addressed to Don Mackenzie. Rowling discusses her new home in Edinburgh, often referred to as the birthplace of Harry Potter and calls her garden an "enchanted place." Boldly signed by Rowling as "J.K. Rowling." Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA to an overall size of 6.5″ x 10″ Rowling writes, in full: "Dear Don, Thank you very much for your letter. I love reading about your memories of Killiechassie. Yes, the walled garden is still an enchanted place it was that that made me want the house more than anything else. And we have also found the freezer! Though I have not walked into it yet (claustrophobia). Yes, do you recognize the Killin viaduct! With best wishes JK Rowling" Edinburgh, often hailed as the birthplace of Harry Potter, has been home to J.K. Rowling since 1993, though she also owns properties elsewhere in the UK and abroad. In 2001, Rowling purchased Killiechassie, a historic country estate near Weem, approximately 74 miles north of Edinburgh, which was once owned by the Douglas family in the 19th century. The estate, situated on 12 acres along the River Tay, became the site of Rowling's marriage to Neil Murray, with the ceremony held in the estate's library on December 26, 2001. The solander box: full red goatskin with five raised bands, title, author, and first edition 1997 to the spine. Internally lined in black suedel which cushions the book and protects it perfectly in a special compartment. A luxurious presentation on the shelf whilst offering perfect protection. Rowling and Harry Potter need no further introduction. The most popular children fantasy series of the last decades which sold hundreds of million copies world wide in its over 60 languages to date. Perhaps Rowling's most important credit is that with the captivating story of a young wizard boy named Harry Potter she made reading 'cool' again for an entire generation of kids which grew up on electronic media entertainment. A highly coveted book and we are proud to be able to offer this copy to collectors conscious to the historical significance of this copy. Stored in a safety deposit box outside our premises. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. PAPERBACK - CORRECT UK FIRST EDITION - A fine copy bound in the publisher's illustrated paper wraps. There is absolutely no fading to the spine, but there is a tiny indentation to the upper spine corner. The front and rear panels are very clean indeed with no creasing, and with no laminate lifting or loss to the paper covers. Internally, the pages are very lightly toned, but much less than usually encountered. Free of any foxing, with no previous owner names or inscriptions inset. The book is the correct UK first edition with the Wendy Cooling review to the front panel, the Philosophers printing error to the rear panel and with the correct 10-1 number sequence found to the copyright page. Included with this book is a Hogwart's Express card, signed by the author, with an accompanying letter of provenance from J K Rowling's PA, Fiddy Henderson, thanking the previous card's owner for their initial letter. Housed in a felt-lined clamshell box that has been custom-made for this book to ensure it does not get damaged in the future. A very nice book indeed that looks unread and has none of the usual fading to the spine invariably seen with this title. It is well known that the book was rejected by all the major publishers but interest was shown by Bloomsbury who made an offer to acquire the UK rights to the title for an advance of around £1500. There were 500 hardback copies and 5150 paperback copies printed simultaneously. Neither has bibliographic priority. This particular book is in extremely fine condition, a stunning copy without any colour fading. It is unread, the binding is extremely tight and square without shelf wear. There is a hint of toning to the page edges, which is always the case with these early paperback books due to the cheap paper stock used when printing. It is without doubt the best copy we have ever seen or encountered. The spine, front and back cover could be described as pristine, without marks or creases or any kind. Internally there are no marks, library stamps or ownership inscriptions, just a slight crease to the top corner of page 105. Aside from this, it is a pristine first printing paperback in beautiful condition housed in a quarter leather clamshell box made by The Chelsea Bindery specifically for this book. A true collector's piece in near perfect condition.

An incredibly rare first edition, first impression of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling, published in both paperback and hardback formats on 26 June 1997. This is one of the 5,150 copies in paperback wrappers, featuring the Bloomsbury imprint, a 10-down-to-1 number line, a list of equipment on p. 53 with "1 wand" listed twice, and the misprint "Philospher's" on the back cover, all of which are required points for a first impression. House in a custom red clamshell case, this is a true investment level Harry Potter first edition and one I cannot recommend more. Given it was published for children, it is genuinely rare to find in fresh condition. Condition Report: Book Condition: Near fine to fine. Covers: Original pictorial softcover wrappers. The wrappers are clean with vibrant colours. Minor bumping to spine ends and corners. Spine: Straight and firm, very minor crease. Text Block: Crisp and clean with no inscriptions, annotations, or library marks. Minimal toning to the page edges, typical for this edition. Binding: Tight with no signs of cracking or loose pages. Dust Jacket Condition: Not Applicable (This first edition was issued without a dust jacket.).

Add to basketFirst paperback edition of the rarest book in the Harry Potter series, a cornerstone of young adult literature, and one of the best-selling books of all time. First printing with âFirst published in Great Britain in 1997â, the full number line â10 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1â, âJoanne Rowlingâ for âJ.K. Rowlingâ, and âThomas Taylor1997â (lacking the space) on the copyright page and â1 wandâ listed twice (as the first item and last item) on the âOther Equipmentâ list on page 53. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. With an original signed illustration by cover artist Thomas Taylor of Harry Potter on the dedication page. At the time of the bookâs publication in 1996, illustrator Thomas Taylor had just graduated from art school and was working at Heffers Childrenâs Bookshop in Cambridge. At Heffers, Taylor educated himself on the childrenâs book market and its major publishers and decided to submit a portfolio of his illustrations to the offices of Bloomsbury Publishing, including several drawings of dragons and wizards. Taylor heard back from Bloomsburyâs editor, Barry Cunningham (who had recently decided to take a chance on publishing Harry Potter and the Philosopherâs Stone after it had been rejected by twelve other publishers) almost immediately. Cunningham phoned him at Heffers and asked if he could create a design for the cover of a relatively unknown authorâs first book about a schoolboy wizard. He sent Taylor an incomplete manuscript of the book and, after two days, Taylor had a final product: a watercolor painting of a young Harry Potter with his lightning-bolt scar standing next to the Hogwarts Express on Platform Nine and Three-Quarters. In very good condition with the wrappers laminated. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The first novel in the Harry Potter series and Rowling's debut novel, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone follows Harry Potter, a young wizard who discovers his magical heritage on his eleventh birthday when he receives a letter of acceptance to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The book was first published in the United Kingdom on June 26, 1997 by Bloomsbury and in the United States the following year by Scholastic Corporation under the title Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The book reached the top of the New York Times list of best-selling fiction in August 1999 and stayed near the top of that list for much of 1999 and 2000. It has sold in excess of 120 million copies, making it one of the best-selling books of all time. The majority of reviews of the popular book were favorable, revering Rowling's imagination, humor, simple, direct style and clever plot construction. Rowling's style has been compared to that of Jane Austen (her favorite author), Roald Dahl (whose works dominated children's stories before the appearance of Harry Potter), and even the Ancient Greek story-teller Homer. The first book in the series was followed by six sequels published on an annual basis between 1997 and 2000. The series has sold more that 500 million copies worldwide and has been âtranslated into 80 languages, âmaking it the best-selling book series in history and among history's most translated literary works.â The last four books in the series consecutively set records as the fastest-selling books of all time, where the final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, sold roughly fifteen million copies worldwide within twenty-four hours of its release. With twelve million books printed in the first U.S. run, it also holds the record for the highest initial print run for any book in history. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was adapted into the 2001 fantasy film of the same name directed by Chris Columbus, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, and starring Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, Rupert Grint as Ron Weasley, and Emma Watson as Hermione Granger. Warner Bros. bought the film rights to the book in 1999 for a reported £1 million ($1.65 million) and the film was released in November 2001 in the United Kingdom, Ireland, the United States, Canada and Taiwan. It was a critical and commercial success, grossing $974 million at the box office worldwide during its initial run, and over $1 billion with subsequent re-releases. It became the highest-grossing film of 2001 and remains one of the highest-grossing films of all time. It was followed by seven sequels beginning with Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in 2002 and ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows â" Part 2 in 2011, nearly ten years after the first film's release.

In this first book in the series of seven, it follows Harry as his life quickly and radically shifts from that of an 'ordinary boy' with the Dursleys to the enchanting, exhilarating world of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. This copy holds special provenance as it was previously owned by J.K. Rowling's literary agent, Christopher Little. This exceptional piece features a Christopher Little Literary Agency label on the half-title page, underscoring its direct association with the agent who transformed J.K. Rowling's career. As a struggling literary agent in London, Little took a gamble on the unpublished Rowling, turning her manuscript into one of the most successful literary franchises in history. In 1995, Rowling then an unemployed single mother in Edinburgh chose Little simply because his name sounded like a character from a children's book. The rest, as they say, is history. Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone; first edition, twelfth printing, paperback; inscribed by the author 'To Plymstock School, J.K. Rowling'. The signature is a very early and highly collectable example of the author's signature with the periods still present after the 'J' and the 'K'; as the author speeded up her signature, the periods were gone by mid to late 1998. Being a much-used school book, the book has lost its laminate and has creases to the covers, particularly the front cover; the spine is sunned, with small splits to the spine foot. Page 9 has a small closed edge tear and light green ink marks to the page. The remaining pages are toned, but in good condition. Inside the front cover of the book is a 'Children's Book Award Tester' sticker - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone won the award in 1998. Name in pencil to top of half-title page 'Plymstock'. First published by Bloomsbury in England as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1997, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is the first book in the Harry Potter series. It introduces both Harry and readers alike to the secret, magical world of wizards and witches in England. Although often regarded as a children's novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone topped adult reading charts in both the United States and the UK. As Michael Winerip writes in his 1999 New York Times review, "like Harry Potter, [Rowling] had wizardry inside, and has soared beyond her modest Muggle surroundings to achieve something quite special.".
